SCATTER CUSHIONS
ABOUT
BIO
Vanessa van Eyk lives with her husband and 2 dogs in East London on the Sunshine Coast, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
Her house sits within a leafy, green, jungle-like garden. She notices plants and birds particularly.
She has worked in fine art and digital art, patternmaking and fabric design while sewing and developing skills in various forms
of needlework and fibre arts. These aspects of her life - art, plants and sewing - coalesce into her botanical textile artwork.
She is currently working on a collection of botanically themed scatter cushion covers.
PROCESS
Her process begins with noticing a plant, seeing the design potential in its form and colours, and investigating its morphology.
The concept for some is inspired by botanical illustration: a representation of a particular plant, faithful to its morphological details
in an aesthetically pleasing composition. For others a more graphic representation is chosen suggested by the drawing.
The work starts with a drawing and layout design, considering and sampling methods and materials to best render the subject
- often in 3-dimensional form - and sometimes developing techniques as needed.
Why scatter cushions?
Scatter cushions were chosen for the textile works to be items of use and beauty within a home, with broader than the more
niche appeal of textile wall art*, and for them to be accessible, handled and tactile textile objects.
Scatter cushions are easily rearranged within the interior environment according to the creative perceptions of the inhabitant.
(*one-off, larger-scale textile wall art pieces and throws are anticipated sometime in the future)
